I got this from my high school and I am really happy to hear that they did the following:
This is Awareness Week at St. George's. On Monday, we observed the Day of Remembrance - a day to remember the victims of the Holocaust. Like the Norwegians in WW2, members of the SG community wore paperclips to demonstrate their opposition to Nazism and AntiSemitism. Tuesday was Equity and Justice Day. History teacher James Bullock led a discussion on the story of Little Rock and showed film clips from the acclaimed "Eyes on the Prize." Wednesday was the National Day of Silence to raise awareness of and to protest against homophobia in schools and society. Members of the SG community remained silent from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm and in the evening met with two gay victims of a recent hate crime. Today is a Dress Down Day to raise money for Live for Liberia, an organization which provides medical assistance in that war-torn country. Fifth Former Sando Baysah (Providence RI), an emigre from Liberia who hopes one day to return as a doctor to her native land, organized the event.
It makes me seriously consider supporting the school financially (my $10 or so) to do more things like this in the future.
Having gone to a relatively snooty VERy privileged school, it is vital that the school teach awareness and tolerance etc. It makes me proud to be an alum.
Go SG.
GO SOX!
